Detroit’s Masonic Temple (The Masonic) is the largest building of its kind in the world. The cornerstone was laid in 1922 during a ceremony attended by thousands of Detroiters, using a trowel previously used by George Washington during the construction of the U.S. Capitol.

Since then, it has become one of Detroit’s premiere venues for concerts, comedy shows, weddings, graduations, etc. That being said, the Masonic Temple was going to need a sign that could showcase multiple events going on simultaneously. So, let’s talk about the sign design.

First of all, the sign had to be seen from several streets and maximize its overall visibility. To accomplish this, we created a V-shaped design to be seen from multiple angles.

Secondly, we had to address the multitude of events for the numerous theaters located within the Masonic Temple. Since we have worked with so many venues, we knew exactly what they would need. An LED digital display could show multiple slides featuring event promotions at a 10 second interval. After 10 seconds, the next events promotion is showcased…and so on and so forth. But this was the Masonic Temple and not just any LED display was going to make due. We opted to use (2) Watchfire 6MM, HD digital displays. Currently, these are the highest resolution, outdoor LED displays in the City of Detroit!

And lastly, the sign needed a centerpiece where both digital displays would meet in the middle. So, our fabrication team routed the “Masonic Temple” letters out of the aluminum cabinet and placed acrylic panels behind them so they could be illuminated by the LED lights inside the cabinet.

So, the sign was mocked up in our shop to assure proper fitting and the 2 giant poles were placed precisely into a concrete footing at the site. The sign mockup assured that this installation went smoothly and every element lined up perfectly. We wired up the LED displays and fired them up to view the game changing resolution that this sign puts out. We were blown away, but even moreso, the client was blown away! That’s the most satisfying and important part of what we do here at Phillips Sign & Lighting…making our clients happy with quality custom signage.

In closing, it was an honor to work with the Masonic Temple of Detroit and we thank you. All these years of providing custom fabricated signage paved the way to working on some of the coolest jobs in Michigan.

Stay tuned to see what’s next…..
